Vestibular Disease

Canine idiopathic vestibular disease, commonly known as "old dog disease" or "old rolling dog syndrome," can be frightening for dog owners.

The symptoms may appear as serious, life-threatening diseases such as a stroke or a brain tumour to the untrained eye.

A vet can establish idiopathic vestibular disease after a thorough medical assessment, which includes monitoring eye movement (which would be rolling in the case of a stroke) and lifting and turning the dog's paw to see if it returns.

It's usually not a stroke if the dog can flick his paw over.

When a dog's ailment is diagnosed, it is usually treated at home unless the dog is vomiting and dehydrated, in which case the dog will be hospitalized and put on IV fluids.
